Privacy policy

Last updated: 5 October 2026

Nūr is a Qur'an learning app. This policy describes exactly what the app does with your information. It is short because the app collects very little.

No account, ever

Nūr has no sign-up, no login, and no email field. We do not know who you are. Your progress, streak, and review schedule live in a database on your phone and are not uploaded anywhere.

Uninstalling the app deletes all of it. There is no server copy to restore.

Your voice

The recitation feature listens to you and compares what you said to the verse.

Your voice never leaves your phone. Scoring is done entirely on the device by a speech model that ships inside the app (a Quran-tuned version of OpenAI's Whisper, published by Tarteel under the Apache-2.0 licence). It is not downloaded, it needs no network, and no audio is sent to us, to Google, to Apple or to anyone else.

The recording is held in memory only while you recite and while the model reads it. It is never written to a file, and it is discarded as soon as your score is computed, so there is nothing to replay and nothing to delete afterwards.

The check is on words and letters. It does not grade tajwid.

Fallback. If the bundled model cannot run on a particular device, the app falls back to the phone's own speech recogniser (Apple's SFSpeechRecognizer on iOS, Android's on-device recogniser on Android). Settings → On-device analysis only is on by default and keeps that fallback offline: it will use the offline Arabic pack if the device has one and otherwise ask you, once, before anything goes over the network. If you allow it, the phone's speech service may process audio through Google's or Apple's servers, governed by their own privacy policies rather than ours. In that fallback only, the last few recordings are kept on the phone so you can replay them beside the reciter's; Settings → Reset my progress or uninstalling removes them.

There is also a switch, off by default, for sending recordings to an analysis server. No server is configured in the app today, and the on-device model keeps no recording to send, so it does nothing.

Microphone permission

Requested only when you first tap Recite, used only while you are actively reciting, and never in the background. Denying it leaves every other part of the app working: the full mushaf, all audio, all lessons.

What we fetch from the internet

  • Qur'anic text, translations and recitations from api.alquran.cloud and cdn.islamic.network. These requests carry no identifier of any kind — just the surah you asked for. Fetched pages are cached on your device.
  • Word-by-word audio from audio.qurancdn.com, when you tap a word to hear it. The request names only the audio file for that word, carries no identifier; the clip is streamed and not stored.
  • Subscription status from RevenueCat, if you subscribe. RevenueCat receives an anonymous ID and your Google Play purchase token so it can tell the app whether the subscription is active. It does not receive your name or email. See RevenueCat's privacy policy at revenuecat.com/privacy.
  • A JavaScript update check from u.expo.dev on launch, so a fix can reach you without waiting for a store update. The request says which platform, which app version and which update you are already running, and it carries a random identifier called EAS-Client-ID. That identifier is generated on this phone the first time the app runs, is stored only in the app's own preferences, and is deleted when you uninstall — it is not your advertising ID, not your device ID, and not derived from either. The request carries no recitation audio, no account, and nothing about what you have practised.

We run no analytics, no advertising, no tracking SDKs, and no crash reporter that carries personal data. There is no third-party ad network in this app. An update check is not analytics: it asks whether newer code exists and is answered with code, and nothing about your use of the app is sent with the question.

Notifications

One optional daily reminder, scheduled on your device at the hour you usually practise, and skipped entirely if you have already practised that day. Nothing about it leaves the phone. Turn it off in Settings.

Payments

Subscriptions are billed by Google Play. We never see or store your card details. Manage or cancel any time from your Google Play account.

The free tier — the complete Qur'an, every translation, every reciter, the whole learning path — does not expire and does not require payment.

Children

Nūr is suitable for all ages and collects no personal data from anyone, including children. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.

Your rights

Because we hold no personal data tied to you, there is no account to delete and no export to request. To erase everything the app knows: Settings → Reset my progress, or uninstall.

If you enabled server-side audio analysis and want those recordings deleted, email the address above.

Changes

Material changes will be noted here with a new date, and announced in the app's release notes on Google Play.
